How an SR22 filing actually works

An SR22 is a certificate your insurer files with the DMV. Here is the process, what you bring on the call, and how to keep it from lapsing.

On the phone we ask for the state on the letter first — not the city you sleep in. If Iowa ordered it and you now live in Colorado, we still file Iowa. That mix-up is the one that delays reinstatement.

A court or the DMV sent a letter that says you need an SR22. The form is not a separate kind of car insurance. It is a certificate of financial responsibility: your insurer tells the state you carry the liability limits that state requires, and that you will keep the policy on without a gap.

Progressive’s SR-22 explainer puts it the same way. Your state page still controls the term. Iowa’s official note is here: Iowa DOT — proof of insurance after a suspension.

What we do on the call

The process is the same five steps as How it works.

  • You call (866) 778-1093 and name the state that ordered the filing.
  • You give a license number, the violation date, and whether you own a vehicle.
  • We quote a carrier that will file. That quote is a filing fee plus the high-risk premium — see quotes versus the filing fee and the longer quotes guide.
  • The insurer sends the SR22 to the DMV. Electronic where the state allows.
  • You keep the policy on. When the term ends, you ask us to take the SR22 off. It does not fall off by itself.

If the ticket was in one state and you live in another, say both. We file where the letter says, not where the mail gets delivered.

Iowa, Colorado, or another state

Open Iowa SR22 or Colorado SR22 if that is the state on the notice. City streets for Sioux City, Ankeny, Ames, Waterloo, Council Bluffs, Dubuque, Longmont, Castle Rock, Loveland, and Broomfield live on those city pages and on Contact. Other cities use the national number.

Sold the car and still owe the form? Read non-owner after you sold the car. DUI letter in hand? Next steps after a DUI letter. Trying to get the license back? SR22 and license reinstatement.

This is general information, not legal advice. Confirm the date and the form with the DMV that wrote you. The homepage is the national overview if you want the short version first.
